High Cholesterol

A keto diet can increase cholesterol levels. A statin is not always needed.

A “keto” diet can lead to significantly elevated cholesterol levels.

At Lifelong Weight Loss, we routinely manage high cholesterol (also known as hyperlipidemia) in our patients. Some of them have developed high cholesterol gradually over the years as their weight increased, others had a large increase in their cholesterol after following a ketogenic diet on their own, and some have had high cholesterol since young adulthood. No matter the case, we can help you to determine whether your high cholesterol could be due to a genetic condition called Familial Hyperlipidemia (FH) or due to dietary factors. We will design an eating plan just for you, based on your cholesterol numbers. Sometimes we are even successfully able to discontinue or lower the dose of statin medications.

We also offer in depth cholesterol testing, including lipoprotein ion mobility, lipoprotein a/b ratio, high sensitivity c-reactive protein (hs-crp), lipoprotein (a), and a coronary calcium score. All of these analyses play an important role in determining your risk for future coronary artery disease and whether starting a cholesterol-lowering medication is right for you.
